Slovenian poet Simon Gregorčič admired the Soča river, and his masterful verses are still recited by all Slovenian children in schools today. The emerald beauty has not only inspired him, but it awakens a poetic spark in every traveler, from its source to its mouth. Its charm even captivated Hollywood.
Take a walk along the Soča river, which starts high in the shelter of the white mountains of the realm of Zlatorog and the Julian Alps. As it leaps from an underground lake into a long waterfall on its way to the valley, its unique flow is sometimes gentle and relaxed, but often wild and thunderous. High above the daily routine, above the valley and the peaks of the Julian Alps, you can observe how its meandering course glides through the entire valley. The picturesque 25 km long Soča trail leads from the source to Bovec. Another beautiful walk is from Trnovo along the foamy rapids, only mastered by the bravest kayakers, to the Podrti bridge, where the world kayaking championship took place.
In the valley, its flow calms down, yet everyone who knows and admires it enters one of the most beautiful alpine rivers in the world with awe and respect. Its emerald waters are bordered by rocky gorges and picturesque shores with villages. It enchanted Napoleon, who boldly crossed it with his army, as well as Hollywood, which captured breathtaking scenes of magical Narnia on its banks. The Soča river also holds the story of an autochthonous trout species, and its delta is protected as a landscape park and a natural reserve for numerous bird species.
